About Us

The Hispanic Families Work Group (HFWG) is a non-profit organization consisting of volunteers who share a passion for improving and creating opportunities for Hispanic and Latino families in McLean County. The Hispanic Families Work Group is open to the public and members include representatives from local businesses, social and health service agencies, faith communities, state and local government, and educational institutions.

Our Purpose

The main purpose of the HFWG is to encourage collaboration and we do this by sharing information, sharing resources, and working together.

For the Hispanic community we focus on improving opportunities for Hispanic families in McLean County.

For service providers and community members within McLean County we focus on helping each other to better serve Hispanic and Latino families. On a basic level we share information on community services, events, news, and resources through our website, facebook page, e-mail listserv and our meetings. At our most involved level we identify gaps in the community and pull our resources together to create recommendations and implement solutions.

History

In 2004, McLean County Judge Ronald Dozier started to express a growing concern for Hispanic families he saw unsuccessfully trying to navigate a complicated legal and non-profit system. Led by Karen Major, HFWG Chairperson 2004-2008, a social service providers meeting was convened to discuss and address the condition of Hispanic families in the local community. From those initial meetings the Hispanic Families Work Group was created as an all volunteer group with the intent of building a stronger community that embraced the Hispanic community and Latino families. Over the past six years the HFWG has grown to include over 100 individuals from over 40 organizations throughout McLean County while continuing to meet the first Friday of every month (except January and July) over lunch.

Over the years the HFWG has had a lot of success and this is solely because of the hard work of countless volunteers with the support of our local organizations, schools, and businesses.  Please see Project & Interns for additional information on our accomplishments:
